What your hairdresser needs you to know about your hair colour appointment, post lockdown
As UK salons prepare to open on the 12th April, Barrie Stephen, owner of the award-winning Barrie Stephen Hair in Leicester is keen to remind people about skin testing protocol before getting their hair coloured in a salon, and how following lockdown, these allergy checks are even more important than ever.
A skin test, or patch test, is where a small amount of hair dye solution is applied to the skin, usually behind the ear to check if someone is allergic to the product used to colour hair in the salon.
In the UK, skin testing for professional use hair colour applied in-salon is a legal requirement under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act where such a test is required/recommended before use, breach of which can lead to prosecution and fines. Generally, hair salons administer patch tests for their clients every few months, and also when a new colour product is being used for the first time.
However, because of the extended period of time that salons have been closed, due to the pandemic, Barrie Stephen is highlighting the criteria under which people will need to get a skin test to mitigate any increased risk of an allergic reaction. Skin tests can only happen when salons are allowed to open on the 12th of April, not before.
Barrie said, “All salons have their own skin testing policy and protocol, based on the manufacturing guidelines provided by the supplier of their hair colour, and this should be communicated to clients before booking an appointment.”
At Barrie Stephen Hair the skin testing policy is as follows:
- Anyone who has not had colour within the last 6 months
- Anyone who hasn’t had a skin test previously e.g. a new client
- Anyone who has used a box dye at home or a home colour service over lockdown
- Anyone who has had a black henna tattoo since their last visit
- Anyone who has had permanent make-up since their last visit
- Anyone who has had a reaction to ANY product since your last visit to the salon
Barrie adds, “The health, safety and well-being of our clients is our top priority and so we are making sure that we take all the necessary steps to provide services in the safest way possible. We are so excited to get back in the salon and see all our wonderful clients again!”
