Heading Back to 90s Grunge

2013 is all about paying homage to the Grunge scene of the 1990s with grown out colour taking centre stage. The key to the look is to keep hair looking unfinished with plenty of movement, texture and braided detail as the Hilton sisters effortlessly display here as they take in Coachella. Allow darker roots to grow through with lighter ends and recreate the grunge era with ease by spraying a little texturizing spray to the ends and allowing hair to dry naturally for that desirable edgy finish. Perfect for getting ready in a tent!

Style Tip: 90s Grunge was all about highly wearable fashion; a worn-looking band vest teamed with a denim jacket will perfect the look. If you have lighter hair then. Festival hair doesn’t always have to be about long wavy locks and braids! The late, great Vidal Sassoon was the king of super sharp crops and bobs and this Mod look can be maintained at Glasto, Reading or whatever festival you are heading too. The key is to book in for a cut right before you go to make sure lines are both sharp and clean. A stash of hairpins to sweep a heavy fringe to one side and lock into place for the day is essential, as is dry shampoo (especially for the last couple of days!)

Style Tip: Dramatic eyes are synonymous with the Mod era so remember to pack your blackest eyeliner! Stick to fitted, androgynous clothing choices and you will complete the look perfectly.

We’re very proud to announce that our talented Artistic Director, Neil Smith, has scooped the national title of Women’s Hair Stylist of the Year at the English Hair & Beauty Awards.

Neil – who’s based at our Anstey salon – went to Manchester where he was named the UK’s top women’s stylist after enjoying a champagne drinks reception, sumptuous dinner, and entertainment from Britain’s Got Talent 2011 winner, Jai McDowell.

Now in its second year, the awards acknowledge the hair stylists and beauticians across England who make clients feel amazing because of their expert skills and customer relations. Neil was nominated for the award by the public and then beat four other finalists to take home the prestigious title of Women’s Stylist of the Year.

Neil says: “A big part of my job is making people feel amazing about themselves whether that be creating a new hair colour or giving advice about styling. I wouldn’t do anything else and I don’t think there’s a better job that picks people up and helps their mood. It was a huge surprise to be nominated and I am absolutely delighted to win.”

The award is great recognition for all Neil’s fantastic work in hair: he’s formally been nominated for Eastern Hairdresser of the Year at the Oscars of the hair industry; the British Hairdressing Awards, and been a member of the Schwarzkopf Professional Young Artistic Team.

He’s also styled backstage at London Fashion Week, at the Clothes Show Live Stop and Chop, for Look Magazine with Cloud Nine, not to mention his nominations for Your Hair Image of the year, Tigi High Fashion Image of the year and the Guild of Hairdressing Photo Stylist of the year as well as being called on to be a judge at Wella Trend Vision awards.

Hollywood shows the world how to do ‘red carpet gorgeous’ in style!

 

It’s no secret that we love a bit of red carpet action… especially one where all eyes are on Hollywood. The best of the best in the film industry gathered together for the awards ceremony of the year last night – the Oscars 2013. As the Oscars always promise to be a fabulous evening of star-studded-style, Barrie Stephen is here to tell us all about his favourite looks.

 

Adele

 

Isn’t our girl doing well? Not only did she sweep up at the GRAMMYs two weeks ago – she’s now gone and got herself an Oscar. Adele is taking America by storm and who can blame them for loving her really? This girl is fantastic!

 

Gracing the red carpet in a black embellished Jenny Packham dress – she looked every bit an award winner. Her voluminous blonde waves looked amazing, I felt so proud when she took the Best Song award for Skyfall. Well done Adele – yet again you’ve done the UK proud!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jennifer Lawrence

I just loved Jennifer’s fairytale Dior white dress – she looked every bit red carpet gorgeous. Teamed with a classic updo and diamond droplet earrings, her look was feminine and very beautiful. Her freshly coloured caramel locks were pulled back into a classic chignon flattering her strapless dress perfectly. Love her.

 

 

Amy Adams

 

Amy, Amy, Amy, that dress, that hair, those earrings… wow! Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out! Every part of the duck egg, tulle Oscar De La Renta gown was just amazing – it was definitely every girl’s dream.

 

She oozed Hollywood glamour and sophistication. Seeing her entrance was definitely a highlight of the evening for me.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jennifer Aniston

She’s done it again – for me Jennifer Aniston can never set a foot wrong – I just love her. Emerging onto the red carpet in a strapless scarlet Valentino gown she looked ever the heroine that we all know and love. Showing off her brand new ash blonde shade Jen An’s hair was worn loose, glossy and looked so sophisticated. She looked every bit the Hollywood starlet for me.

 

Anne Hathaway

 

 

A seemingly simple, pale pink, Prada gown was the Best Supporting Actress winner’s choice of attire for the red carpet. The lady of the moment – there was so much buzz surrounding what she might wear and more importantly what awards she might take home.

 

Her crop was swept across her face and worn feminine and textured giving her an elegant style and complimenting the addition of her jewellery. Well done Anne – you’re always one of our favourites for red carpet gorgeous looks.

Well if 1D’s Harry Styles wasn’t regretting breaking up with Taylor Swift before then he certainly will now! She looked beautiful in a black, floor length, double-slitted gown worn with a little gold belt and her hair was just to die for. Her buttery blonde locks were worn sleek, looking super healthy with lots of gloss – she looked amazing. Get the look by blow drying your hair using a large ceramic brush, pointing the nozzle of your hairdryer downwards. To add that extra little va-va-voom use a blow-dry spray. To seal the sleekness, run over lightly with a pair of straighteners and spritz with a shine spray.

What is this? Jessie J has completely ditched the risqué, leaving nothing to the imagination, emerging with a more lady like, sophisticated look. Doesn’t she look great? Gone is the blunt, androgynous statement look that we all know as her signature style and in its place is a more natural, beautiful feel. No false eyelashes, dark lips or bold eyeliner in sight – just an effortlessly healthy glow. Jessie is obviously showing to the world that she’s moving on and is making a statement with a more grown-up, glamorous style. We just love it here – you go girl!

To get Jessie’s sleek locks you will need your hair straighteners to hand but it’s always a good idea to protect the hair so make sure that you use a protection spray to minimise any heat damage.

Emeli Sande

We are massive fans of Emeli Sande in our salons and didn’t she look fabulous walking the red carpet at the Brit Awards? Sporting a little black dress with a frilled button up detail – Emeli looked great as ever, a British talent not to be rivalled. Her short style was in curls, strategically styled on top of her head – she definitely rocked the red carpet.

To get Emeli’s quiffed crop, simply curl the top section of your hair with tongs and pin each curl into place to cool. Once set, remove the pins, shape into place using your fingertips and spray with a strong hold hairspray.

Caroline Flack

Caroline is always fabulous on the red carpet and the Brit Awards were absolutely no exception. Showing off her chocolate shade she looked great and teamed the new colour with a stunning sheer navy blue slash-neck number with elaborate chiffon sleeves, nude peep toe shoes – it was the perfect choice.

Her hair was worn in effortless waves but if you want to copy this look at home then you’ll need to put in the leg work. This wave is achieved using a large barrelled tong, curling all of the hair to begin with and then brushing it out using a dressing brush to create a gorgeous tousled feel. Keep your look in place using a flexible hairspray.

Jo Whiley

Queen of rock n’ roll Jo made her entrance on the red carpet in true style with a gorgeous sky blue full length gown with diamantes at the sleeve. We just love her style and her love of music shows on the biggest evening in the industry calendar. Her hair was in a simple updo and it looked super chic in a sexy chignon.

To re-create Jo’s look loosely pull your hair into a side ponytail and secure with a band without pulling your hair all the way through. Now in sections pin the hair back on itself to create a detailed chignon. Spray to hold in place and leave any loose pieces at the front free to frame the face.

That’s what friends are for…..

It was a night of celebration and glamour for the salons this week, as the stars of the past year were announced at our annual team awards 2013. With a Sex and the City theme, and held in the suitably appropriate Manhattan Bar in Leicester, thirteen trophies were presented, a new art team was revealed and our 2013 theme was launched – Friends and Family.

BBC Radio Leicester Breakfast Show presenter, Jonathan Lampon, kicked the evening off by introducing his friend Barrie Stephen to the stage.  And then Barrie had the team spell-bound with his story of how it all began; talking about the friends and family who were there to support him right from the beginning when he opened the first salon in Anstey 17 years ago.

Keeping it close to home, the guest speaker then took to the stage, Paralympic gold and silver discus medallist winner, and also client of the Anstey salon, Dan Greaves, who continued the friends and family thread as he told the story of his sporting success. Recounting incredible triumph, world record throws, four Paralympic Games podiums, and an army of loyal supporters, Dan owed his rise to the top to the support and encouragement of his loved ones who literally travelled the world to show their commitment to him. 

The evening flowed with long-service anniversary recognition awards for our team members for both 7 years (Carly Riley, Jo Hatten and Jade Finnegan)

and 10 years (Neil Smith, Leanne Watkins, Leah Wright-Smith, Jemma Raisin, Emma Brown, Tia Coltman).

The new 2013 art team was also announced to squeals of delight from the successful three applicants: Annie Morelli, Kate Shearer and Nicole Storer who all now have a year of festivals, photographic shoots, shows and competition events ahead where they will represent the Barrie Stephen team. 

Then came the team awards which gave Barrie the chance to applaud the finest performances of 2012 across the team from newcomer to best creative stylist, to overall achiever, manager and most inspirational person. And a hat trick was won by Grace Forster picking up Home Care Advisor, Colourist and Kerastase Ritual Ambassador.

The awards were presented by a host of local stars from Team GB athlete Dan Greaves through to BBC Radio Leicester football reporter Ian Stringer, producer Namrata Varia and BBC East Midlands Television reporter Eleanor Garnier as well as brand representatives from Kerastase, KMS and the sponsor, managing director of Schwarzkopf Professional, Linton Husbands.

Barrie Stephen said: “This had to be the best team awards night yet. It had the wow factor from the beginning:  a red carpet welcome for everyone with jazz music from a double bass player outside the bar and a singer inside, and then an evening of celebrating team work and individual star-shows.

“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved over the last 17 years. Barrie Stephen is a name people associate with high quality hairdressing but when people come up to me in the street, or stop me in the salons…they don’t talk about me, or the brand or the name…they talk about my team. They are the business!

 “2013 is all about friends and family; those people nearest to us, be it friend or family, who makes us who we are, who challenges us, who cheers us on, who congratulates us and who consoles us when it goes pear-shaped. Our clients are just part of this extended family and it’ll be a year to show them even more love, customer care and special treatment.”
